Distributed Operating Power Supply: DC Power for HV Switchgear Operation

A distributed operating power supply is a small, independent DC power module installed directly inside or near high-voltage switchgear cabinets. It provides stable DC power for circuit breaker opening and closing mechanisms, protection relays, indicator lights and monitoring devices, replacing the traditional centralized DC power supply panel scheme.

Different from the centralized DC system that uniformly supplies power to the whole switchgear room through long cables, the distributed scheme configures an independent power module for each cabinet or each interval. The module takes power from the local AC or PT voltage source, converts it into 110V or 220V DC, and supplies power to the operating mechanism and protection devices on site. This design eliminates the voltage drop and line loss caused by long-distance DC transmission, and avoids the risk of full-station power failure caused by single-point failure of the centralized power supply.

The biggest advantage of distributed operating power supply is its high reliability and flexible deployment. Each power module works independently, and the failure of a single unit will not affect the normal operation of other cabinets. The module is small in size, can be directly installed in the secondary chamber of the switchgear, and does not need to set up a separate DC power supply room, which saves construction cost and space for small and medium-sized substations. Most products are equipped with battery backup inside, which can still complete multiple opening and closing operations even when the AC input is interrupted.

This power supply scheme is especially suitable for small box-type substations, outdoor pole-mounted switchgear, distributed photovoltaic grid-connected cabinets and industrial distribution stations. It is also an ideal choice for the renovation of old substations, which can solve the problems of aging lines and insufficient capacity of the original centralized DC system without large-scale transformation.

When selecting models, key parameters such as rated output voltage, output current, battery backup capacity and installation size should be confirmed. It is also necessary to match the corresponding protection level according to the installation environment to ensure stable operation in humid, dusty or high-low temperature environments.

We provide a full series of distributed operating power supply modules with multiple voltage specifications, which can be adapted to most mainstream switchgear models. Contact us for product datasheets and targeted selection suggestions.
