DC operating power systems are independent direct-current power supply units dedicated to high-voltage substations and switchgear rooms. They provide stable 110V or 220V DC power for circuit breaker operating mechanisms, protection relays, measuring instruments, signal indicators and emergency lighting, ensuring that switching and protection actions execute reliably even during AC grid outages.
A standard DC operating power system consists of three main parts: rectifier charging units, battery banks and DC distribution panels. Under normal conditions, the rectifier converts AC mains into regulated DC to supply the control load while floating-charging the battery bank. When AC input fails, the battery bank takes over the entire load seamlessly with zero transfer time, guaranteeing that breakers can still perform opening and closing operations and that protection devices remain active.
Modern DC operating power systems adopt a modular design with intelligent monitoring functions. Each rectifier module supports hot-swappable replacement, allowing on-site maintenance without shutting down the whole system. The built-in battery management unit monitors cell voltage, temperature and state of charge in real time, and automatically performs equalization charging to extend battery service life. The system can also be connected to a substation SCADA system via communication ports, realizing remote monitoring, fault alarm and unattended operation.
These systems are widely used in 10kV–500kV substations, power plants, industrial distribution stations and renewable energy collector stations. They are available in wall-mounted, floor-standing and cabinet-integrated structures to fit different installation spaces and capacity requirements.
When selecting a DC operating power system, users should first confirm the rated voltage, total load current and required backup duration. It is recommended to configure N+1 redundant rectifier modules to improve reliability, and select battery capacity according to local outage frequency and maintenance cycles. For harsh outdoor environments, models with enhanced dust-proof and temperature-adaptive designs should be prioritized.
